Editorial

The session on October 30, 2026 opens on a crypto market shaken but functional. The security incident declared by Binance, with an estimated impact of around 5,53 milliards € (6,3 milliards USD), is a harsh reminder that operational risk remains central, even for the most established players. The initial responses – freezing part of the funds, activating internal reserves and cooperating with authorities – illustrate an industry more structured than in its early days, but still vulnerable to human and technical weak points. At the same time, regulators are refining their tools. In the United States, a Bitwise 10 Crypto Index ETF project enters the generic framework of NYSE Arca, while the CFTC chair sketches a future where autonomous AI agents interact directly with blockchains. On the technological front, Ethereum pauses with the postponement of the Glamsterdam deployment on the Hoodi testnet, due to uncertainties about the impact of a key EIP. For investors as well as projects, the priority of the day is risk management: counterparty risks, code risks, but also timing risks, with a wave of unlocks and a final Fed meeting in December likely to increase year‑end volatility.

Binance facing the largest hack in crypto history: what we know as of 30 October 2026

Binance acknowledged on 30 October 2026 a major security incident, with an estimated impact of 5,53 milliards € (6,3 milliards USD). The case tests the operational resilience of the world’s largest crypto exchange and its safety nets for users.

On 29 October 2026, Binance reported a “security incident” after the alleged compromise of a DevOps engineer’s laptop. According to the exchange, that access opened the way to takeover of a service container, allowing unauthorized withdrawals. The next day, on 30 October 2026, Binance put the total impact at about 5,53 milliards € (6,3 milliards USD), while stating it had found no evidence of private key leakage, a central point for users’ trust.

In its 30 October 2026 update, Binance said that about 2,63 milliards € (3 milliards USD) of assets related to the attack had been frozen on-chain, thanks to cooperation from several blockchain partners. This ability to immobilize nearly half of the targeted funds illustrates the rise of coordinated response mechanisms within the ecosystem. But it also highlights growing dependence on a few key actors capable of blocking assets at scale.

As early as 29 October 2026, the AP reported that the CEO of Tether had frozen more than 1,32 milliard € (1,5 milliard USD) of USDT associated with a “potential Binance hack,” in order to limit suspicious fund transfers. These freezes, combined with those obtained by Binance from other partners, raise again the question of de facto centralization within crypto infrastructure, notably around systemic stablecoins used as collateral and as a means of transaction.

Binance states that all residual losses will be covered by its SAFU fund and by its own funds, promising an update of its proof of reserves once the technical remediation is complete. For users, the issue goes beyond mere financial compensation: it is about verifying the robustness of internal access controls and DevOps procedures. For the industry, this episode constitutes a real-world test of collective safety nets and the ability to contain a shock of unprecedented scale.
