October 29, 2026 will remain a pivotal date for the crypto ecosystem. With about 6,3 billion dollars, i.e. nearly 5,5 billion euros, stolen from Binance, the industry faces the largest attack in its history. This episode concludes a “Black October” already marked by a series of cybersecurity alerts, and reminds us that the promise of a programmable financial system remains inseparable from high operational and geopolitical risk. In the very short term, the issue is continuity of service and user protection: Binance says it intends to fully cover the losses and is cooperating with the authorities, while Tether and other actors freeze funds linked to the attack. But the shock is first and foremost political. In the United States, calls are multiplying to strengthen oversight of offshore platforms and clarify regulators' powers. In Europe, this sequence occurs just as MiCA is beginning to be applied. In this context, October 31 is less another episode of volatility than a full-scale stress test for the security architecture, governance and credibility of the sector vis-à-vis central banks and institutional investors.

Binance: anatomy of a record €5,5 billion hack

On 29 October 2026, Binance suffered an attack assessed at about 5,6 milliards € (6,36 milliards $), described as the largest crypto platform breach to date. The incident redefines the scale of counterparty risk on centralized exchanges and strains the entire crypto infrastructure.

On the night of 29–30 October 2026, Binance confirmed the theft of digital assets valued at approximately 5,6 milliards € (6,36 milliards $). The platform later quantified the incident at nearly 5,5 milliards € (6,3 milliards $), calling it the "largest hack" ever suffered by a crypto exchange. The attack occurs against a backdrop of volume concentration among a few major players, which mechanically amplifies systemic risk when one of them is hit.

According to an official update, the attack began with the compromise of a laptop before spreading via other entry points identified by Binance. The company says it has found no evidence of private key leakage at this stage. To contain the incident, it temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals between 29 and 30 October 2026, while conducting security checks and attempting to freeze part of the fleeing funds.

Binance states that the incident affected about 5,5 milliards € (6,3 milliards $) of assets and promises to fully cover users' losses from its own resources. This stance aims to avoid an immediate crisis of confidence, but it also highlights the dependence of millions of customers on the financial and operational strength of a single entity. Internal risk management and fund segregation mechanisms are now being scrutinized by regulators and the market alike.

On the geopolitical front, several sources point to the North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor as the main suspect, in line with previously documented illicit financing campaigns. In the United States, the FBI and the US Secret Service are collaborating with Binance to trace on‑chain flows and attempt to recover part of the stolen sums. Beyond the Binance case, this record hack rekindles the debate on the concentration of risks in centralized platforms and on the resilience of the global crypto infrastructure.
