Editorial

The day opens with a crypto market torn between technical optimism and macroeconomic caution. Yesterday, Bitcoin touched a seven-month high, pulling part of the market in its wake and rekindling investor interest in risk assets. However, this upturn clashes with a global environment that encourages restraint. Major central banks, from the ECB to the Fed and the Bank of Japan, seem coordinated in a monetary tightening policy to counter persistent inflation. This generalized rise in key rates weighs on available liquidity and could curb upward momentum. In Europe, the regulatory framework continues to solidify with the implementation of MiCA, pushing players towards compliance and fostering more structured institutional adoption. Caution therefore remains key: if short-term signals are encouraging, the macroeconomic backdrop and upcoming regulatory decisions will dictate the trend for the coming months.

Bitcoin Reaches Seven-Month High, Pulling Sector Stocks in Its Wake

Bitcoin has surpassed the €74,000 mark, its highest level in seven months, triggering a significant rebound in cryptocurrency-related stocks on Wall Street. This technical movement is being closely watched, although its sustainability remains dependent on upcoming macroeconomic indicators.

September 21, 2026, saw Bitcoin continue a strong bullish momentum, surpassing $84,500 (approximately €73,910) to reach its highest level since late January. This performance was partly fueled by a wave of short position liquidations, totaling nearly $800 million (approximately €699 million) within 24 hours on the cryptocurrency market. This surge allowed the overall market valuation to exceed $3 trillion (approximately €2.624 trillion), demonstrating a marked renewed investor interest in digital assets.

This rebound in the main cryptocurrency directly benefited publicly traded companies in the sector. Shares of the Coinbase exchange platform thus recorded a 4.9 % increase, while Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), known for its massive Bitcoin investments, saw its stock rise by 6.9 %. Other players, such as mining companies Riot Platforms and Mara Holdings, and stablecoin issuer Circle Internet, also saw their shares appreciate, illustrating the strong correlation between the health of the cryptocurrency market and the stock performance of these companies.

Financial flows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) confirm this enthusiasm. Monday, September 21 alone saw record net inflows of $999 million (approximately €874 million) into these US-listed funds, the highest daily amount in nearly a year. Recent weeks have been particularly dynamic, with cumulative net inflows of $3.8 billion (approximately €3.32 billion) over a three-week period in September, marking the best performance of 2026 for these products.

Despite this ambient optimism, caution remains. Analysts point out that this rapid rise, partly due to a "short squeeze" (forced buying to cover short positions), could be followed by a correction phase. The future course development will depend on the market's ability to maintain these levels and investors' reaction to upcoming global economic indicators. The sustainability of this upward trend will therefore be a key element to monitor in the coming weeks, to confirm whether the market has indeed emerged from its recent period of consolidation.
