Sudden sell-off on November 5: crypto caught up by global risk aversion
The coordinated drop in Bitcoin, the crypto market and ETFs linked to digital assets on November 5 reminds that the ecosystem remains closely correlated with shocks in equity markets. Divergences between indicators and among large caps nonetheless highlight a more nuanced landscape than it appears.
On November 5, 2026, Bitcoin erased in a few hours part of its recent rally. According to Basis Desk, the asset closed the day around €67 800 (environ 75 970 USD), down about 5.7% over 24 hours after a high near €72 100 (80 773 USD). Another market tracker, Bullquill, reported a similar price of €67 800 (76 005 USD) on November 6 at 00:00 UTC, a drop of about 5.5% over 24 hours, confirming the scale of the downward move.
The selling pressure was not limited to Bitcoin. Basis Desk indicates that total crypto market capitalization fell to about €2 275 milliards (2 550 milliards USD), down roughly 5.6% over 24 hours, with Bitcoin dominance around 59.6%. These figures reflect a risk-off move across the sector, in a context where digital assets remain largely held by investors also exposed to equities and traditional derivatives.
On the traditional markets side, a summary from Fool.com links this crypto correction to the worst Wall Street session in 18 months. The deterioration of risk appetite in equities, notably in certain tech segments, weighed on Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, illustrating the rapid transmission of macro and market shocks to listed crypto products. For market participants, this sequence confirms that institutional flows make digital asset prices sensitive to the same signals as major risky asset classes.
The picture is however not perfectly uniform. A daily report from CryptoLite notes that on November 5, despite a slight decline in total market capitalization to about €2 400 milliards (2 690 milliards USD, or –0.9% over 24 hours), Ethereum gained around 3% over the observed period. This divergence among large caps highlights the weight of factors specific to each network, but also differences in methodology and time windows between data aggregators.
For investors as well as regulators, the November 5 episode is a reminder that crypto now operates in an integrated financial environment, where risk management decisions are made at the level of global portfolios. The coexistence of sharp pullbacks in Bitcoin, more moderate signals on total capitalization and a positive performance for Ethereum calls for a cautious reading of daily indicators. Above all, it confirms that durable decoupling from equity markets remains, at this stage, limited.
